Hair System Tape and Adhesive: A Professional Selection and Removal Guide
A salon-focused guide to hair system tape, adhesive compatibility, skin considerations, removal, cleaning and maintenance records.

Attachment materials should be selected for the actual base construction, customer skin considerations and the product maker's instructions. Tape or adhesive that suits one hair system may be unsuitable for another. This guide provides a checklist for professional discussion rather than personal medical advice.
## Match the attachment to the base
Identify whether the attachment zone is lace, PU/skin or a hybrid. Check the adhesive or tape manufacturer's label for permitted surfaces, cure/drying requirements, storage limits and removal product. Some systems use tape around PU perimeters while others require a different technique at a lace front. Avoid assuming compatibility from colour or thickness of a tape alone.
## Client intake and skin considerations
Ask about previous irritation, known sensitivities and relevant product reactions. Use a patch-test process when instructed by the product manufacturer and do not apply adhesives to broken or inflamed skin. Stop use and refer to a healthcare professional for persistent irritation or concerning symptoms. Avoid claims that an accessory is hypoallergenic unless the exact product evidence supports that term.
## Application workflow
Prepare the hair system and intended attachment surface according to their product instructions. Keep oils, conditioners and loose debris off the bonding area. Confirm hairline position before exposing adhesive. Use the manufacturer's specified handling and setting method; pressing harder or using extra adhesive is not necessarily safer or longer lasting.
## Removal and cleaning
Do not rip a hairpiece from the scalp or tug individual lace strands. Work with the approved remover, allow the recommended dwell time, and separate the bond gradually as instructed. Protect the underside base and hairline during cleaning. Confirm the base is fully clean and dry before the next application. If the manufacturer requires ventilation or specific disposal procedures, follow them.
## Keep a maintenance record
Record the base type, adhesive/tape used, application date, removal approach and any reported reactions. For salons, this makes follow-up advice more reliable and helps prevent accidental substitutions when several staff work with the same client.
